U12 Red Drop 3 While Black Plays Strong In Weeks 6 and 7

The past two weeks saw both U12 Red and Black face their toughest opponents in league play.  Red went 0-3 and Black went 1-2.  While Red struggled to find the consistency that could get them over the top, Black played well in 3 games characterized by tactical organization and patience in their build up play.  Red will be looking to rebound as all 3 defeats were characterized by periods of poor, effort, focus and execution followed by periods of sheer brilliance only to fall short in the end by 1 goal.

For Red so many valuable lessons were learned this weekend.  First and foremost, you play the way you train.  If there is one thing that the Red group should take away from this it's that their inability to bring the proper focus and effort in the last few Thursday tactical sessions was reflected in their inconsistencies these past two weekends.  You can't go through the motions in training and then expect to perform at your best at the weekend.  Second, they showed that at times they are virtually unstoppable against any opponent.  and, they should look to those moments as motivation to be more consistent in their overall approach to training and games.  Third, the season is long and demanding, and while it is difficult to maintain that level, it is nonetheless something that young players need to try and accomplish.

For Black there were some valuable take homes as well.  First, one minor lapse in concentration can result in givng up a goal.  On a couple of occasions it only took a couple of seconds of loss of focus and goals were conceded.  The good thing about playing such quality competition is that it will teach you to maintain your focus throughout the course of the game.  Second, if we are going to have a chance to win against quality opponents we are going to have to create more scoring opportunities.  At the moment we are relying too much on individual ability to get into the attacking 1/3 and there is little support for our attackers.  So we have to work on attacking as a unit rather than relying on 1 or two individuals.  Third, sometimes the scoreline doesn't reflect the product.  Losing 3-1 and 3-0 may seem like big defeats, but when you look at the overall play of the Black squad in those 2 losses, you can't deny the fact that they owned much of the possession and absorbed the opponent's attacking movements very well.

This week of training will be critical for both squads as we prepare for the upcoming Pride Cup over the weekend of October 4-5.  As in the previous tournament, the goal for both teams will be to advance out of group play.  We need to have good showings in league play this weekend to provide that push going into the tournament.
